Company size and industry impact what a business needs, including when it comes to how to find suppliers in China. A good relationship with a foreign counterpart influences the direct relationship you have with your consumers, making your choice of supplier extremely important. In part, the Chinese culture determines what kind of relationship you will have with a supplier, but things like product price, minimum ordered quantity, and manufacturing processes also affect how well you can work with a supplier in China.

Tips for How To Find Suppliers in China

Because your supplier is an extension of your own brand’s value and business model, do careful research when selecting a supplier. Look beyond the products and services offered to see how the company operates and adheres to your own ethical practices and expectations of quality.

1. Understand the Different Suppliers

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that all suppliers are the same type of business. There are many differences between sourcing agents, trading companies, suppliers, factories and manufacturers. While there is some overlap among these businesses, being aware of the differences can save you a lot of time and frustration.

2. Look Beyond the Price

Cost shouldn’t be the priority when considering how to find suppliers in China. Price does impact your business profitability, but cheap, poor-quality goods will cost your business. An expensive supplier isn’t a guarantee of the best service or craftsmanship, either. Focus on quality, delivery experience and flexibility as the greatest factors of value.

3. Avoid Negotiating on Shipping

The expenses of shipping are hard to negotiate, as there are minimums the supplier must meet in order to deliver your product. The best strategy is to compare shipping prices across several of the suppliers you are interested in and look for a good deal. Reputable suppliers range from offering at cost to charging a little extra to turn a small profit.

4. Look Past the Label and Images

Some Chinese suppliers use pictures of a factory on a website to encourage Western partnerships even though the company isn’t a factory at all. Many suppliers believe the Western mindset automatically turns to factory pricing for how to find suppliers in China, and images of a factory or the term could conjure up a positive perception of a supplier.

5. Be Realistic About Product Delivery Times

Having a product in hand to deliver to your consumers takes time, especially if you are contracting with a Chinese supplier for a customized build. Custom orders can take six months or longer from the time you research and develop a design to the point where it can be fulfilled by your company or Amazon. Even if your product is customized, plan for two to three months when it comes to having a product sourced and shipped.
